10 Things You Can Do to Support our Local Regional Parks!

Many Sonoma County residents are concerned that our parks are closing. While it is true that state parks, such as Annadel, are threatened with closure, our Regional Parks—such as Spring Lake, Ragle Ranch and Doran Beach—remain open. Funding for these parks, however, is declining. Every year since 2008, the County of Sonoma has decreased funding to Sonoma County Regional Parks. In the current fiscal year alone, funding was cut by 25%. In spite of these financial challenges, Regional Parks is determined to survive—and thrive! Sonoma County residents and visitors cherish our parks and are committed to keeping them well maintained and open, and to supporting their outstanding facilities and programs. With your help, we will develop new income sources to preserve one of the most spectacular regional park systems in the world.
Following are 10 ways you can help the parks. Some of these ideas raise money yet won't cost you anything! Please take action today. For details about any of these fundraising options, or for more information about how you can support Sonoma County Regional Parks, go to the Sonoma County Regional Parks and Foundation web site at sonomacountyparks.org.

SAVE THE DATE! May 14th and 15th—Green Valley to Participate in the Annual iGrow 350 Home and Garden Challenge!
On May 14th and 15th, Green Valley Consulting Engineers will once again join thousands of people across Sonoma County by rising to the challenge of creating a more sustainable community by participating in the 2011 iGrow Home and Garden Challenge. Last year, as one of the 628 garden actions, Green Valley entered the City of Sebastopol Hwy 116 center median as our garden challenge. The goal of the project was to transform this very prominent entry point into the City that was over-run with weeds into a beautiful, water-wise and pollinator friendly native landscape. Green Valley's garden project this year is to transform a thirsty, local business park lawn into a thriving, water-wise native landscape. Stay tuned for more details on our project and how you can join our team! The goals of the 2011 iGrow 350 Home and Garden Challenge is to inspire 1,000 actions to grow food, conserve water, and save energy. To learn more about the Challenge or to enter your own garden click here.
Green Valley Employees Volunteer Their Service in Honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
A handful of Green Valley employees and their family members were amongst dozens of people Monday morning helping remove invasive blackberry brush at Foothill Regional Park in Windsor. Foothill Park is a popular 211-acre park off of Arata Lane offering beautiful hikes amongst the oak trees, access to a pond, and more. Green Valley employees took a short hike into the park led by one of the Park Rangers and dug in for three hours tackling the tricky blackberry brush near the pond.
Green Valley Adopts City of Sebastopol Medians
Located at the gateway to the City of Sebastopol on Hwy 116 in front of the famous Screaming Mimi’s ice cream shop, Green Valley has adopted and donated design and construction of two city landscape medians. Currently under construction, the project was a collaborative effort between Green Valley and Earthscapes Design. The landscape renovation took careful consideration of the unique and special aspects of the community and includes a traditional Knot Garden with herbs that will provide long-lasting and interesting color and texture throughout each season, a complement to the area that the children and families of Sebastopol will truly enjoy. Plant selection was based on including plants that were pollinator and water-wise friendly and will include lavender, roses, rosemary, calendula, and other medicinal and culinary herbs. All design, construction materials and labor were donated by Green Valley.
Two of Green Valley's Own Judge the Sonoma County Science Fair
More than 100 students from 16 Sonoma County schools participated in the annual Sonoma County Science Fair sponsored by the Sonoma County Office of Education. Green Valley's own Joe Gaffney and Paul Lescure were two of the honored judges who were involved in selecting the top 2011 projects. Some of the incredible winning projects included Rocket Fuel Performance and Aerodynamic Structures. The Sonoma County Science Fair gives grade 6-12 students the opportunity to study a topic that interests them and apply their scientific knowledge to a real-life question. Students participate in the Science Fair by creating a project individually or in a group of two or three students. Local scientists, businesspeople, teachers, and others serve as judges and interact with students about their projects. On the day of the Science Fair, students present their projects to the judges and participate in science workshops. For a complete list of 2011 science fair winners please visit scoe.org.
Holiday Giving
This Holiday season Green Valley has decided that in lieu of spending money on Holiday cards for our clients and friends that we would donate the money to community organizations that are in need of our support. Our contributions include a sponsorship of the Town of Windsor's Charlie Brown Christmas Tree Grove Decorating extravaganza. Over 100 trees were decorated during the event and Green Valley sponsored one tree decorated by Mrs. Matoe's 2nd grade class of 22 students with the donation of markers, paper, paint and wooden dog ornaments. The decorating was part of the children's art curriculum during school. The tree was finished off by Green Valley's 2010 Dog Postcards which were laminated in-kind by Digital Prints and Imaging in Santa Rosa.
The Redwood Empire Food Bank is hosting their annual Food Drive. Green Valley's employees are gathering up their extra goods from their kitchens and donating them to this great cause. Nearly 1 in 5 Sonoma County residents faces food insecurity and any support the Food Bank will receive will help to ensure that 78,000 children, families and seniors receive the food assistance that they deserve during this critical time of year. Fort Bragg Welcomes New Skate Park to the Community. Green Valley Honored During Grand Opening Ceremony

After thirty years of planning and fundraising, the Mendocino Coast Recreation and Park District and community members along the Mendocino Coast welcomed a new recreational addition to their community, the Fort Bragg Skate Park. The new skate park features steps, rails, boxes, benches, and walls for skaters to grind and slide their way around nearly 10,000 SF of skate heaven.
Green Valley had the pleasure of attending the Grand Opening Ceremony for the new skate park on November 20th. We were recognized during the festivities for our donation of 42-hours of construction inspection personnel time to ensure the successful construction of the project as well as for our monetary donation for construction materials.
The new Fort Bragg Skatepark is located at the C.V. Starr Community Center on Lincoln Street in Fort Bragg. To learn more about the Fort Bragg Skate Park, join them on Facebook!
Green Valley Donates to USA New Horizons Project in El Salvador
USA New Horizons, a small local non-profit in Sonoma County, is sponsoring a project to raise $20,000 to fund the shipment of desperately needed medical supplies and equipment, valued at up to $250,000, to the Benjamin Bloom Children's Hospital in El Salvador. The Hospital, located in the capital city of San Salvador, is the only children's hospital in the country. It provides medical treatment to children not only from El Salvador, but also from the neighboring countries of Nicaragua and Honduras.
Although the Hospital has well-trained and highly dedicated physicians on staff, their efforts to treat children are hampered by their lack of adequate medical equipment and supplies. As a result, much of the medical treatment available to the children is primitive compared to contemporary standards, dating back to the early 1900's in many instances. To donate, go to usanewhorizons.org.

Bridging the Doyle Scholarship: Santa Rosa Junior College
Each fall semester, nearly 2,000 recent Sonoma County high school graduates enroll at SRJC and received the benefit of a Doyle Scholarship of at least $1,000. But this will not happen this fall. With double digit unemployment, dwindling summer jobs, and fewer and fewer slots available at all colleges, Sonoma County's high school graduates are facing unprecedented challenges. That is why Green Valley has made a donation through the "Bridging the Doyle" campaign to help bridge the gap made by the temporary loss of the Doyle Scholarships. Learn more.
