Bridging the Doyle Scholarship: Santa Rosa Junior College
Each fall semester, nearly 2,000 recent Sonoma County high school graduates enroll at SRJC and received the benefit of a Doyle Scholarship of at least $1,000. But this will not happen this fall. With double digit unemployment, dwindling summer jobs, and fewer and fewer slots available at all colleges, Sonoma County's high school graduates are facing unprecedented challenges. That is why Green Valley has made a donation through the "Bridging the Doyle" campaign to help bridge the gap made by the temporary loss of the Doyle Scholarships. Learn more.

2010 Sonoma County Junior Livestock Auction Sponsor
Green Valley was a proud sponsor of the 2010 Sonoma County Fair Junior Livestock Auction. Each year several of Green Valley's employees attend the auction to help support local FFA and 4-H members as well as the Sonoma County agriculture community by purchasing livestock through the Auction. The proceeds are used to fund college savings accounts and Green Valley staff have a fun afternoon at the fair!

Green Valley Participates in the iGrow 350 Challenge
County wide gardening initiative event a success!

On Saturday, May 15th Green Valley Consulting Engineers joined in with over 600 gardening projects to participate in the iGrow 350 Challenge. The catalyst for the initiative developed by Health Action, a health action council developed by the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors dedicated to improving health and health care for all Sonoma County residents, was to further the commitment that by 2020 Sonoma County will be the healthiest county in California to live, work, and play.

The weekend goals were to create or expand over 350 water-wise and food gardens throughout Sonoma County to which the event far exceeded and concluded the weekend festivities with over 600 gardens.

The project Green Valley selected was a center median located where Hwy 116, Hwy 12, and Main Street meet within the City of Sebastopol. The center median is approximately 120-square feet of newly engineered and constructed space donated by Green Valley to the City of Sebastopol. The last phase of the donated project was to create a beautiful, water-wise, and safely landscaped area for the iGrow 350 Challenge. A considerable amount of clean-up and restoration was required including the installation of a water-wise drip irrigation system. Because the median is located at one of the busiest intersections in Sebastopol, Green Valley had to take careful consideration with their plant selections to ensure no plants were too tall which would inhibit the visibility of vehicular and pedestrian traffic, thus causing danger.

Plant selection included a combination of native plants and grasses as well as other flowers and herbs intended to show native and non-native plant palettes that are appropriate for water conservation as well as attract essential pollinators such as a variety of bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies. Plants that require similar amounts of water were arranged together and will be irrigated by a water-efficient drip system.

The goals of the 350 Garden Challenge were about creating a healthy homegrown food supply, reducing water consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, supporting local businesses, building community and beautifying our neighborhoods. Green Valley was thrilled to be part of such a successful endeavor!

Two of Green Valley's own to judge the Sonoma County Science Fair
On Wednesday, February 24th, Joe Gaffney and Paul Lescure will be judges for the Sonoma County Science Fair. Sponsored by the Sonoma County Office of Education, the Sonoma County Science Fair gives grade 6-12 students the opportunity to study a topic that interests them and apply their scientific knowledge to a real-life question. Students participate in the Science Fair by creating a project individually or in a group of two or three students. Local scientists, businesspeople, teachers, and others serve as judges and interact with students about their projects. On the day of the Science Fair, students present their projects to the judges and participate in science workshops.

Petaluma Rose and Garden Club's 4th Annual Rose Pruning Event a Success
With an excellent turn-out due in part to a front page mention in the Home Section of the Press Democrat, the cooler than cool winter day in Sonoma County did not detour anyone from enjoying an afternoon of activities during the Petaluma Rose and Garden Club's 4th Annual Rose Pruning Event and Demonstration.

Guests had an opportunity to get up close and personal with the rose pruning process with Green Valley's own Landscape Architect Sandra Reed, as well as other rose pruning professionals, who offered demonstrations throughout the day and answered questions participants had. Refreshments and lively discussions ensued. All material removed from the rose bushes was given to local farms for compost and feed.

The Petaluma Rose and Garden Club was founded four years ago while Sandra Reed was designing the Petaluma Train Depot's site plan and rose garden. The Club is now comprised of a group of volunteers who have agreed to maintain the rose garden at the Petaluma Train Depot in perpetuity. The event was sponsored by Green Valley and was held on Sunday, January 24th at the Petaluma Arts Center located in the historic Petaluma Train Depot. Sonoma County YMCA Youth Team Sponsorship
Green Valley is the proud sponsor of a Sonoma County YMCA youth sports team for children ages 6-8 years old. The goal of the YMCA Youth Sports program is to ensure children excel at that other game we're all familiar with—the game of life. The YMCA teaches children to become not only better players, but better people. They encourage fair play, positive competition, and family involvement, all things Green Valley highly values. If you'd like to learn more, visit the Sonoma County Family YMCA website. In addition to our monetary sponsorship, Green Valley also donated a reusable tote bag full of Green Valley goodies including Green Valley custom coloring books, water bottles, and more.

Green Valley Donates to the Muscular Dystrophy Association

Green Valley's peer, Greg Hurd with BKF Engineers, is being locked up "for good" and going "behind bars" during a fundraiser to help the Muscular Dystrophy Association on February 24th, 2010 at The Cantina in Santa Rosa. To be released on good behavior he has to raise bail and needs our help! Make a donation. All proceeds go to the Muscular Dystrophy Association to provide help and hope to kids and adults served by MDA in our community.

Because We Care—Donation Made to the Rohnert Park/Cotati Boys and Girls Club of America

In every community, children are often left to find their own recreation and companionship in the streets. With 30% of American youth not graduating high school on time in 2006 and 16% of our nation's youth classified as overweight, something has to be done—and fast. Why? Because today's young people are tomorrow's leaders, and what they learn and experience now will affect all of our lives in the future. The Boys and Girls Club offers programs and services that promote and enhance the development of youth by instilling a sense of competence, usefulness, belonging and influence. Green Valley realizes the importance to support our next generation of leaders, and that is why we made a donation to support the local Rohnert Park/Cotati Boys and Girls Club—because we care.
