Green Valley bids farewell to Amanda Bunte
Green Valley had the pleasure of having Amanda Bunte join our team this summer as an intern from California State University, Chico. Amanda is entering her second year at Chico State and is majoring in Environmental Science with a focus in Hydrologic Science. Her intention is to become a Hydrologist upon graduation. She joined Green Valley for the summer so she could gain hands-on knowledge of an engineering firm in action. In the meantime, we are keeping our fingers crossed that Amanda joins us in the summer of 2011.

Cold-Foam Asphalt Base Stabilization Featured in UC Berkeley Newsletter
Green Valley's award-winning project, Fort Bragg Downtown Streetscape was featured in the UC Berkeley Institute of Transportation Studies Spring 2008 newsletter. Download and read the article (PDF). The project was featured for its utilization of the cost-saving and environmental friendly technique of cold-foam asphalt base stabilization (PDF), a roadway recycling process in which all of the pavement and some of the underlying material is pulverized and treated with a foamed asphalt additive to produce an improved, stabilized base. In 2006 and 2007, the City of Fort Bragg, performed a two phase project using the foamed asphalt process that Green Valley designed. The project was recently honored with an ACEC Small Firm Merit Award for Engineering Excellence in part for its utilization of cold-foam asphalt.

Sonoma County Regional Parks Cheney Creek Bridge & Trail Project Now Completed
Green Valley recently completed design and engineering for the new Cheney Creek Bridge & Trail project. This new, safer and shorter off-road route is an important link in the California Coastal Trail and connects Doran Beach Regional Park and Bird Walk Coastal Access. Doran Beach Park offers a variety of recreational opportunities attracting 300,000 annual visits from people enjoying the spectacular views, two miles of sandy beach, and camping, fishing, and boat launching facilities. The Bird Walk Coastal Access is a revitalized saltwater marsh located at the southern end of Bodega Bay, and offers a unique opportunity for coastal wildlife viewings as well as providing home to thousands of birds throughout the year.

The project included a 110-foot long and 8-foot wide prefabricated bridge which crosses Cheney Creek as well as 2800 feet of ADA accessible non-paved trail. Green Valley designed the bridge abutments, provided grading and drainage plans, and assisted with permitting. The timing of construction was carefully planned during low creek levels minimizing potential impacts to fish. It was also scheduled outside of nesting periods for local birds. The project was funded by a grant from the State Coastal Conservancy, Sonoma County Measure M funds, and Park Mitigation fees.
